Musica Sacra

From the pure, simple chants of early Christianity to more complex harmonies of classical and contemporary compositions, music of the Church is reverent, joyful, mysterious, profound, and sustaining. At various times thoughout the year, the celebrations of the Mass are heightened, with deeper sorrows or greater joys reflected in the music. At the 11:00 a.m. Mass, the choir offers Jehan Alain’s poignant Requiem in remembrance of the faithful departed. The 7:30 p.m. Mass features the Kyrie and Agnus Dei from Francesco Anerio’s Missa Pro Defunctis (1569–1630), uniting ancient and modern voices in prayer for the souls of the departed.

Music at St. Michael presents a festive celebration of the season featuring the parish’s choirs: the St. Cecilia Choir, St. Gregory the Great Schola Cantorum, St. Hildegard Choir, St. Dominic Savio Choir of Boys and Girls, and the St. Dunstan Handbell Choir, joined by chamber orchestra. The program includes Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols with baritone Lucky Rattan and Gustav Holst’s Christmas Day, alongside familiar carols and beloved Christmas choral works, all sung amid the radiant decorations of St. Bernard Church. Chaz Bowers conducts, with Aaron Sproul and Kevin Litzinger at the organ.
