Church Bells

The church bells of St. Michael the Archangel Parish, whether ringing the angelus, tolling for funerals, or celebrating weddings, throw their voices across the South Hills, proclaiming from their steeples that God is always with us.

The bells at St. Bernard are known as “peal” bells.  Three mammoth cast-iron bells–Bernard, Regis, and Thomas — swing on massive frames in their tower to throw their clappers into the sides of these great bells, producing their distinctive sound.  For an excellent history of the St. Bernard bells, including hearing the bells as they ring, click to view the video below.

Just as our two churches each have their own unique character, so do their bells. At Our Lady of  Grace, the bells’ voices are produced by a digital carillon, electronically answering the call to ring for their people of faith.
